Dear Sec 2BC & 2E,

Please kindly try out the online lesson here & complete worksheet 3.1, 3.2 & 3.3:

http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/settlement_wales/eng/Learningobjecti/default.htm

Although it is about Wales (in England), the content is very relevant and similar to your textbook. It will be useful and fun for you to do this!

Please ensure that you do this activity and your workbook by next week Wednesday 16/02/2010! We will go through the answers in class =)

Thanks!

Blog Project Reflections

Dear Sec 2s,

Hope you had enjoyed the blog project! We are now currently in the midst of peer assessment, and I hope all of you will be fair to your friends! No hard feelings, ok?

The results will be out by next week! Stay tune for the results!

I thank the groups who have treated this blog seriously! It is very heartwarming to see how some of you have improved and grow during this project. I was very touched by one pupil's reflection on how this project had gave her more confidence! I also hope that this project have given you the opportunity to have some fun in learning =)

However, I am also disappointed in some groups for failing to meet the deadlines. I think we all need to be clear why we are in school, and what we want to achieve. For me, I am a teacher, and I know I want to teach and guide you. For you, you are the student, and I believe you want to learn. So..... *sigh*... I really do hope that these pupils will take their work more seriously =(

Sample Blog for Secondary 2 Project on Low Birth Rate in Singapore

Introduction
We are a group of pupils from Peicai Secondary School who will like to investigate more about the recent news of low birth rate in Singapore. We have interviewed 10 people ranging from 20-54 years old to find out more about the causes and impact of low birth rate in Singapore. We also asked the people about their views on how Singapore can improve birth rate. The rest of our blog will show how we have done our survey and the findings.

Teacher's Note: You should include your objectives and briefly describe how you have interviewed them. You are not allowed to copy the entire paragraph as your introduction. Write your own, depending on what question you ask.

Background Information (Express Classes Only)

Methodology
We interviewed a total of 10 people. We did the survey questions together. In pairs, we went to Serangoon Central outside Macdonalds during Saturday afternoon. We looked at the people and approached people who looked like they are more than 20 years. We asked them our survey questions and wrote down their responses.

We asked the following questions:
1. Are you married? If so, how many children do you have or intend to have? If not, how manve children do you want to have after you get married?
2. Why do you want to have children? or Why don't you want to have children?
3. Why don't you want to have more children?
4. What other reasons do you think why Singaporeans don't want to have children?
5. Why do you think the government is concerned about the low birthrate?
6. What do you think the government can do to encourage you or other people to give birth to more children.

Teacher's note: Start off the paragraph by summarising how many people you interview, and how you interview them, followed by the questions that you ask.

Results & Analysis
Out of the ten people interviewed, five were already married, four were single but intending to get married, and one didn't want to get married. The one who didn't want to get married said that she wants to concentrate on her career and she does not want to be tied down by a family.

Out of the nine who want to get married, only eight wanted to have or have children. The one who didn't want children said that children were too expensive in Singapore, and he and his wife have agreed that they would rather spend time between themselves. The other eight mostly wanted 1-3 children. They said that children are fun, interesting and makes a family complete. Some wanted children so that they can take care of them when the parents are old.

All eight said didn't want to have more than three children because of the high cost of living in Singapore. Three stated that there is not enough space in the house for more than three children. Five also feel that Singapore life is too stressful and competitive to bring up a child.

Many shared that Singapore is concerned about this issue because Singapore needs people to help the economy grow. They also feel that if Singapore have very low birth rate, there will be lack of manpower in case of defense.

Some solutions shared by the 10 people include giving fathers more paternity leave so that fathers can be more involved. They would also want the government to subsidise childcare centres more since it is very expensive.

Teacher's note: This is just a sample. you should write more. follow your questions to help you write your results. you will notice that each paragraph actually summarise the findings for each question. do not just write down their answers.

Conclusion
In conclusion, we found that actually more people wanted to have children, but they do not want to have more than 1-3 children due to the high cost of living in Singapore. The government can help by giving fathers more leave and subsidise childcare centres.

This project helps us to learn more about Singapore and its low birthrate. We had an interesting experience as we learnt how to craft a survey and also how to write a blog. It was not easy as we had to interview people and we had met with some difficult people. Here are the individual reflections and contributions of our group members:

I have contributed to my group by being the group leader. I organised meetings and help to print out the survey forms for my classmates. With Jimmy, we interviewed 5 people among us. I did the questioning while Jimmy wrote down the answers. For the blog, I helped to write the background information together with Jimmy, and I wrote the results along with Jessie.

Teacher's Note: Start off by concluding your project followed by your reflections. You should write individual reflections and also include every contribution that you have made to your group.
